Macular dystrophy is a rare genetic eye disorder that can result in vision loss. The condition affects the retina, or the back of your eye, by damaging cells in the macula. The macula controls what you see in your central field of vision. Those suffering from macular dystrophy typically have difficulty seeing straight ahead. Our eye doctors at Carlson-Tillisch Eye Clinic in Mankato and New Ulm would like to look at macular dystrophy and how we can help.

The Symptoms of Macular Dystrophy

If you wake up in the morning only to see dark spots or floaters, you may be showing signs of macular dystrophy. It is also common for people and objects in front of you to “disappear” as the condition progresses. Reading fine print also becomes difficult when you have macular dystrophy. Light sensitivity and seeing halos are also commonly associated with this condition.

Macular Dystrophy & Macular Degeneration

Macular dystrophy and macular degeneration are not the same. Macular degeneration is common among individuals over the age of 65. Although the condition may lead to blindness, those under 65-years-old are not as high of a risk to develop the condition. There is no minimum age for developing macular dystrophy. Some researchers believe the condition is caused by a genetic mutation. Others, however, hold to the notion of more research being necessary to pinpoint the precise cause of macular dystrophy.
